Find Great Lamps to Light Up Your Dallas Apartment

by Sr. Editor on September 12, 2008

Often the first design decisions made are the most obvious ones…the large furniture pieces. People often choose their sofas, beds, dining room tables and their dressers before choosing anything else. But when completing a space and creating a cohesive design, the finishing touches can’t be overlooked. Apartment lighting is one of those finishing touches.

Incandescent vs. Fluorescent Lighting

Incandescent Light Bulb- It’s the traditional light bulb as we know it. In an effort to become more energy-efficient, these are being phased out and replaced by fluorescent light bulbs. By 2014 incandescent light bulbs will cease to exist, banned by US Congress.

Fluorescent Lighting- Compact fluorescent lighting costs an average of six times more than its less energy-efficient counter part, the incandescent light bulb. It lasts years instead of months and is 75% more efficient. These bulbs perform optimally if they are not turned on and off frequently.

Choices for Attractive Lamps and Lighting Fixtures

Floor Lamps – Use floor lamps in corners or to anchor large scale furniture pieces like a sofa. They can help illuminate a large room when overhead lighting is not available or desirable. They come in a variety of styles. You can get traditional floor lamps, funky modern contemporary floor lamps and everything in between.

Table Lamps and Desk Lamps – These are the lamps you’ll use to accent the main lighting in your apartment – sometimes called ‘task lighting’, because it serves a specific lighting purpose. Desk lamps, lamps on nightstands and lamps on entry consoles or sofa tables all fall into this category.

Hanging Lamps- There’s huge variety in pendant lighting that will please all design aesthetics and be suitable for all rooms in your house. You can even use them outdoors. When hung over a nightstand or end table, they free up valuable surface space.

Optimize Your Natural Light- Use sheers on your windows in your
Dallas apartment instead of heavy draperies if privacy is not compromised. Hang mirrors around your space that reflect light from outside, illuminating your space.
